1. The principle of the Vickers hardness tester
The Vickers hardness test was introduced by Robert L. Smith) and George E. Sandland) at Vickers Ltd in 1921. It is a standard for indicating the hardness of a material.
The specific operation is to use a four cone diamond pressure head with an angle of 136 degrees, press into the surface of the test sample under the action of the specified load F, remove the load, measure the diagonal length d of the test sample surface, and then calculate the indentation surface area, which is the Vickers hardness value of the metal, expressed by the symbol HV.
In the actual measurement, it is usually not necessary to calculate, but according to the measured value of d, directly check the table to obtain the measured hardness value.
2. Characteristics of the Vickers hardness measurements
Advantage:
1, high precision, good repeatability: the indentation of Vickers hardness test is diamond, the pattern is clear, diagonal measurement is accurate. Therefore, the Vickers hardness test is a commonly used hardness test method with relatively high accuracy, and its repeatability is also very good.
2、Wide range of applications: The Vickers hardness test has a wide range of measurement, and can measure almost all metal materials used in the industry, from very soft materials (several Vickers hardness units) to very hard materials (3000 Vickers hardness units).
3、Easy to operate: the great advantage of the Vickers hardness test is that its hardness value has nothing to do with the size of the test force, as long as the material has uniform hardness, you can choose the test force, its hardness value is unchanged. This is equivalent to having a uniform ruler in a very wide range of hardness. In the range of medium and low hardness values, on the same uniform material, the Vickers hardness test and the Brinell hardness test results will give the approximate hardness value.
4、Small damage to the measured work-piece: the test force of the Vickers hardness test can be as small as 10 gF, the indentation is very small, the surface indentation of the sample is almost invisible to the naked eye, and the measured work-piece is almost undamaged.
Disadvantages:
1、High work piece configuration requirements: because the Vickers hardness test method needs to observe and measure the microscopic gap, usually need to be equipped with a microscope for observation.
2、The sample to be tested has high requirements: in order to obtain accurate test results, the Vickers hardness test method requires cleaning the material surface, keeping the sample surface clean.
