 What is World Metrology Day?

May 20, 2022 is the 23rd "World Metrology Day",it is an important day for Sinowon teammates . The International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) and the International Organization for Legal Metrology (OIML) released the 2022 World Metrology Day theme "Metrology in the Digital Era". People recognize the changing trends that digital technology has on today's society.

On May 20, 1875, 17 countries signed the "Meter Convention" in Paris, France, an intergovernmental agreement to adopt the International System of Units and ensure consistent measurement results worldwide. For more than 100 years, the International Metric Convention has played a huge role in ensuring the unification of international measurement standards, promoting international trade and accelerating the development of science and technology. In 1999, the 21st International Conference on Weights and Measures designated May 20 each year as the "World Metrology Day".

Background

Metrology is an important foundation to support social, economic and technological development. Modern metrology includes scientific metrology, legal metrology and engineering metrology. Scientific metrology is the development and establishment of measurement base standard devices to provide the basis for the transmission and traceability of quantity values; legal metrology is to supervise the measurement of important measuring instruments and commodities related to the national economy and people's livelihood in accordance with the law to ensure the accuracy of relevant quantities; engineering measurement is for the whole society. For other measurement activities, we provide measurement calibration and testing services for measurement traceability.

 Development History

From October 11th to 15th, 1999, the 21st International Conference on Weights and Measures was held at the Bureau of International Weights and Measures in Paris, France. In order to make governments and the public understand metrology, encourage and promote the development of the field of metrology in various countries, and strengthen international exchanges and cooperation in the field of metrology. In cooperation with the General Assembly, May 20 is designated as the World Metrology Day every year, which has been recognized by the International Legal Metrology Organization.

On May 20, 1875, 17 plenipotentiaries of 20 countries signed the world-famous "Meter Convention". The "Convention" and its annexes led to the joint funding of the signatory countries to set up a permanent scientific institution, the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), whose location was determined in France. This is the cradle of the metric system. The International Bureau of Weights and Measures is governed by the International Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) and a committee of scientific experts known as the "International Committee on Weights and Measures" (CIPM). Its purpose is to ensure "international unity and development of the metric system".

Since May 20, 2000, countries around the world have started a series of activities to publicize the World Metrology Day [3] . The International Organization for Legal Metrology (OIML) announced at the 2001 OIML Chairman's Council that national metrology institutions in all countries are encouraged to take advantage of World Metrology Day on 20 May for their activities. The determination of "World Metrology Day" has brought the human's understanding of metrology to a new height and the impact of metrology on society has entered a new stage.
