Optical brightening agent is suitable for different applications and in various temperature conditions. Optical brighteners, or fluorescent whitening agents, are used to make plastics, fibers, coatings, inks, and detergents appear whiter and brighter. These products function by absorbing invisible ultraviolet light and re-emitting it as visible light in the blue range of the spectrum. These products are particularly useful to mask the yellowish cast sometimes observed in plastics and fibers after high temperature processing operations. They are also used in substrates containing pigments or dyes to make colors appear more brilliant. Optical Brighteners (OBAs) or Fluorescent Whitening Agents (FWAs) are added to products such as laundry soaps, detergents, and cleaning agents. They absorb to fabrics or materials during the washing or cleaning process and when illuminated by ultraviolet light they fluoresce and make products and fabrics appear brighter. Fluorescent whitening agents are used in laundry detergents to improve the whiteness of fabrics. Unbrightened fabrics have a yellowish colour due to blue light deficiency during light reflection. Fluorescent whitening agents compensate the blue light deficiency by absorbing the UV-part of daylight and emitting in the blue part of the visible light. By far the greatest use of brighteners is in detergents, and almost every commercial detergent contains one or more brighteners.
